Ergothioneine (also known as L-sulfhydrothioneine, EGT). In 1909, Charles Tanret isolated it from ergot (ergot is the sclerotium of ergot fungus and ergot microcephalum of Clavicipitaceae family), hence the name. At present, it has been found that it can be synthesized in some microorganisms such as mushrooms, streptococci, and mycobacteria, and can be absorbed and accumulated by plants and animals.

1. A Powerful Antioxidant

For many years, Ergothioneine has been considered a highly effective low molecular weight antioxidant.

It is mainly consumed in the human body through daily diet and can accumulate in cells subjected to high levels of oxidative stress. Compared with Resveratrol, an antioxidant with high free radical scavenging capacity but low bioavailability, ergothione has higher bioavailability. This is mainly due to the biological characteristics of Ergothioneine and the presence of OCTN1 (Ergothioneine transporter) in human epidermal cells and tissues, which enables Ergothioneine to accumulate in the epidermis and the epidermal Stratum corneum.

It is worth noting that, unlike many water-soluble antioxidants such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, and polyphenols, Ergothioneine does not penetrate through the cell membrane and its function is limited to cells and tissues that possess OCTN1.

2. It has the effect of inhibiting DNA, protein, and lipid damage and cell apoptosis caused by ultraviolet radiation

Ultraviolet radiation can activate the signal pathway related to growth factor and Cytokine receptor. Ergothioneine can inhibit MMP-1 (Matrix metalloproteinase, which mainly degrades type I collagen) and TNF induced by ultraviolet light- α The expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) can promote the production of various inflammatory factors by T cells, thereby promoting the occurrence of inflammatory reactions. It can resist photoaging, inhibit DNA, protein, and lipid damage and cell apoptosis caused by ultraviolet radiation.

3. Other Functions

Oral Ergothioneine can inhibit Sleep disorder caused by stress and alleviate insomnia caused by depression.

Ergothioneine can be used as an antioxidant protective component during organ transplantation. At present, the most commonly used glutathione is easily oxidized when exposed to the environment, and the aqueous solution of Ergothioneine is very stable, which can better protect transplanted organs.
